The times of yesteryear are gone, in a place where we could see a cat and dog sewn together in the middle, or a stick that hosted his own talk show. No those years have past, and never again will we completely miss the point of why two beavers were so angry with the migration of thousands of salmon.
Nickeldeon has greatly changed from a time when kids “rules” the station for kids by kids. Today we are left with terrible programming decision and shows that have no substance. What happened to the edgy content for kids like Rockos Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, or Pete and Pete. Nickelodeon took us to a world where not everything was candy canes and snickerdoodles. A world where not everyone got along all the time. A world where there were bully’s, real issues, and semi adult humor. The world that helped kids grow up to be NORMAL.
This era of kids programming ended with a yellow sponge that dumbed things down. Lost were the humor of the 90’s and the learning of real life issues that came with it. Along came dumb humor, annoying characters, and happy go lucky attitudes all the freaking time. This may sound like a raging rant of a 90’s kid, and sure it probably is, but I remember the days when Nick stood for something. The days when kids ruled the airwaves, the days when we had our own slime studio in Orlando, the days when Marc Summers, Kenan and Kel, Danny Tamberelli, and Lori Beth would fill our minds with magical wonder. The grand old days when we had time capsules stuck under slime, and Gully Gully Island felt real.
Nickelodeon has tried to bring back the nostalgic feel with horrible revamps like the ”Legends of the Hidden Temple” movie....like really who was asking for that? Then promising Rockos Static Cling (ravamped movie for Rockos Modern Life), which seems to have disappeared already.
Nick has recently announced that Kenan from Kenan and Kel Is working on bring All That back and there is also currently production being worked on for a new Are You Afraid of the Dark series. Nickelodeon is hoping to spark the interest of adults who were fond of the originals and grab the attention of new viewers to help boost their ratings. The question stands though, can Nick bring back the excitement we had for these shows in the 90’s and will they be as over the top as they were then, or has modern society broken the spirit of the innovative Nickelodeon?
Can Nickelodeon be Nickelodeon again, and give kids today the edgy, scary, funny, and intelligent shows we had growing up? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
